Cara is an experienced Internet, media, and technology lawyer with over twenty-five years of in-house counsel experience. She focuses on technology, content, e-commerce, advertising, and other services, and has extensive experience structuring and negotiating complex, unique deals, inbound and outbound licensing arrangements, and a variety of template transactional and in-house guidance documents.

Before OGC, Cara served as Deputy General Counsel at LivingSocial, where she led the transaction and product legal practice and acted as lead counsel for strategic partnerships, including key alliance and distribution relationships, cloud-based services, marketing, and content and technology development and licensing. Internally, she led product reviews and crafted the associated terms of service, as well as template agreement initiatives for the domestic and international advertising sales teams. Cara also chaired a workgroup for the Cardlinx Association tasked with producing model language for consumer disclosures and consents related to credit card–linked offers.

Prior to LivingSocial, Cara spent time with MySpace, working on strategic entertainment and technology initiatives, and with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) as technology counsel. She was also senior-level counsel with AOL for nearly ten years, with a primary focus on the technology, video, and social media space.

Cara advises clients on AI use and contract terms, and recognizes the benefit AI can provide to her own work as one of many tools to enhance client value.

Cara began her legal career in Washington, DC, with Covington & Burling, where she built a broad-based corporate practice focused on technology and licensing transactions for clients ranging from startups to Fortune 50 companies, before moving in-house.

Cara is a graduate of Bowdoin College (A.B., 1991, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and holds a J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law (1997). She is admitted to practice in California and Washington, DC.

A Massachusetts native, Cara and her husband are based in Los Angeles but spend as much time as possible on Cape Cod, or, when allowed, visiting her daughter at college. She serves on the board of directors of organizations on both coasts, each addressing missions she’s passionate about: food insecurity and sustainability, climate change, and coastal stewardship and access.
